Located at North of Colombian Caribbean Sea Coast
Due to the historic events that took place in the city, as well as its cultural, architectural and artistic richness, it was appointed National Heritage of Colombia in 1959 and Cultural and Historical Heritage of Mankind in 1984 by UNESCO.
The walls of Cartagena de Indias were built to defend the city from attacks of the enemies of Spain. They were started at end of the XVI Century after the attack from legendary Sir Francis Drake. The fortification system is the most complete in the South American continent and one of the best preserved in the whole world.
Cartagena de Indias is a museum city. Its streets and surroundings show the charm of its architecture, that mixes colonial, republican and modern styles. “The Heroic city”, as it is known due to gestas carried out in its defense, was the site of many great battles where the fate of America was fought.
